On February 14th and 16th, two groups of Honors students paid tribute to St. Valentine by attending performances of the ballet Moulin Rouge at the Benedum Center in Pittsburgh’s Theater District. The trip was planned by freshman Katie Abramowich in response to requests from Honors students to attend more cultural performances, similar to Rigoletto last semester. One group, with freshmen Lauren Walk, Jessica Chin, Tara Dillan, Diane Gorog and Katie Abramowich as well as sophomores Kelly Weaver and Brittany Henderson attended the show on Valentine’s Day. The Saturday matinee show was seen by Tori Mikulan, Garnet Brown, Sara Dinwiddie, Sarah Robb, Kyrstin Dittenhafer-Swartz, Brittany Palac, George Maldonado and Mark Gaynord. All who attended were thrilled with the show, which, contrary to popular belief, was not entirely similar to the movie of the same name. Moulin Rouge: The Ballet tells the story of laundress-turned-showgirl Nathalie who tries to maintain a relationship with Matthew, a painter, while slowly becoming the object of her possessive manager Zidler’s affections. Beneath the lights of Paris’s most risqué theater, Nathalie faces a dark reality, one that ends tragically. The performance was a wonderful spectacle of glitzy costumes and beautiful dancing. Honors thanks Katie Abramowich for planning such an amazing trip.
